Step-by-step tutorial for creating complete technical documentation using CodePlan. Learn how to use our five-step wizard to generate PRDs, schemas, and more.

Switching from CodeGuide? Welcome!
We built CodePlan to be 100% compatible with CodeGuide projects. You can import your existing documentation, preserve all your work, and start saving money immediately.
Bonus: Your first successful import earns you 10,000 bonus tokens (worth ~$20) - enough to regenerate all your docs with our optimized AI prompts.
Prerequisites
Before you start, make sure you have:
- A CodePlan account (free to create)
- Your CodeGuide project exported as a ZIP file
- 5 minutes to complete the import process
Step 1: Export from CodeGuide
In your CodeGuide dashboard, find the project you want to migrate:
- Click the three-dot menu on your project card
- Select Export Project
- Choose ZIP Format (not individual PDFs)
- Wait for the download to complete
Your ZIP file should contain all documentation files plus a manifest.json with project metadata.
Step 2: Import to CodePlan
Log into your CodePlan dashboard and follow these steps:
- Click the Import from CodeGuide button (or visit /import)
- Drag and drop your ZIP file into the dropzone, or click to browse
- Wait for the upload and parsing to complete (usually 5-15 seconds)
- Review the import preview showing all detected documents
- Click Confirm Import
Step 3: Verify Your Import
After import completes, CodePlan will:
- Create a new project in your dashboard
- Preserve all original document content
- Convert file formats to CodePlan structure
- Award 10,000 bonus tokens to your account (first import only)
Open the imported project and click through each document to ensure everything transferred correctly.
What Gets Imported
CodePlan automatically imports and converts:
- Project name and description: Transferred exactly as-is
- PRD (Product Requirements): Features, user stories, acceptance criteria
- Tech stack documentation: Framework choices, libraries, justifications
- File structure: Directory trees and file organization
- Database schemas: Tables, columns, relationships, indexes
- User flows: Journey maps and process diagrams
- Styling guides: Colors, typography, component patterns
What Doesn't Transfer
A few CodeGuide-specific features won't carry over:
- Version history (CodePlan starts fresh with version 1)
- Comment threads (you can add new ones after import)
- Team member invites (re-share the project in CodePlan)
- Custom templates (use our 40+ built-in templates instead)
After Import: Next Steps
Now that your project is in CodePlan, take advantage of these features:
- Regenerate with better prompts: Use your bonus tokens to regenerate any document with CodePlan's optimized AI prompts
- Share with team: Invite Viewers or Commenters (no per-user fees)
- Start version tracking: Save up to 10 versions as your project evolves
- Export in new formats: Try our Markdown export or bulk ZIP download
Troubleshooting Common Issues
Issue: "Invalid ZIP format" error
Make sure you exported the full project ZIP from CodeGuide, not just individual document files. The ZIP must contain a manifest.json file.
Issue: Missing documents after import
Check that all documents were included in your CodeGuide export. Some older CodeGuide projects may have incomplete exports - try re-exporting.
Issue: Bonus tokens not credited
Bonus tokens are awarded after your FIRST successful import. Check your billing dashboard. If you still don't see them after 5 minutes, contact support.
Migrating Multiple Projects
Need to import more than one project? No problem:
- Export each CodeGuide project as a separate ZIP
- Import them one at a time in CodePlan
- Bonus tokens apply to your account, not per project
- All imported projects share your credit balance
